The boot-versus-trail-runner argument has quietly resolved itself on America's long trails: the overwhelming majority of thru-hikers now wear trail running shoes. But thru-hikers are a specific population, and the right answer for you depends on three variables — load, terrain, and your ankles — not on tribal loyalty.
