Modern hikers don't get lost less than their predecessors — search-and-rescue data suggests the opposite, with wandering off-route among the most common triggers for rescues. The phone made navigation easier and navigation skill rarer. The fix is a layered system where no single failure leaves you guessing.

A paper map of the area and a baseplate compass weigh three ounces, never run out of battery, and survive rain and drops. A 30-minute practice session that covers the essentials

Skills unpracticed are trivia; here is a session that converts the reading into ability, done at any local park with a paper map (print one at home if needed) and a baseplate compass. First ten minutes: orient the map — set the compass to north, rotate map and compass together until the needle aligns with the map's north, and now every direction on paper matches the world; re-orient after every move until it's reflexive. Second ten: terrain association — stand at a known point, pick three visible features (hill, pond, trail junction), and find each on the map; then reverse it, picking map features and finding them in the world. Third ten: walk a bearing — choose a visible target, sight it, read the bearing, then walk to it looking only at the compass. That half hour, repeated once, puts you ahead of most hikers on the trail.

Two habits to install alongside the skills: check the map at every junction while you still know where you are (navigation is continuous confirmation, not emergency consultation), and estimate arrival times for waypoints, because noticing "we should have hit the creek twenty minutes ago" is how errors get caught while they're still small.
